Fornbiargi awl, diamond shape. Available in two sizes. Cocobolo handle and hardened tip with consistent thickness along the entire length.
Used to create diamond shaped holes in leather for sewing, as well as in combination with the Fornbiargi pricking iron.
The awl is sharp and slides easily through all types of leather. The cocobolo handle fits well in the hand and the grooves provide a good grip.
2.0 mm is recommended together with pricking iron up to 3.38 mm.
2.5 mm is recommended together with pricking iron from 3.85 mm.
It´s not really the hole spacing on the pricking iron that determines which awl you use, but the thickness of the thread and the needle. The larger awl widens the hole a little more, which makes it easier for thicker thread. The awl's job is to widen the hole enough to be able to sew more easily, as well as to create evenly sized holes on the back of the leather.
Use a strop to regain sharpness after prolonged use.
